TEXT: Matthew 2:1-12
TOPIC: Light in the Darkness
SERMON SUMMARY:
The sermon describes how Jesus' birth ushered in a cosmic battle between light and darkness, good and evil. When Jesus was born, the glory of God was revealed through the visit of the magi and the angels appearing to the shepherds. But at the same time, evil forces were at work through King Herod's desire to kill Jesus.
This cycle of light shining and darkness resisting continues today. As Christians, we will experience both receptivity and hostility when we shine the light of Christ. This was modeled by Jesus himself. The sermon encourages us not to be discouraged by negative reactions, but to continue being bold in living out our faith.
In our current cultural climate, biblical truths about human nature and morality often elicit strong reactions both for and against. But we are called to shine the unchanging light of God's truth, not to retreat in fear. Our role is to pray for God's kingdom to come and shine through us. We don't rely on our own strength, but on the power of the Holy Spirit working through us. As we walk closely with Jesus, he will give us the grace and wisdom to navigate divisive issues with both conviction and compassion.
The darkness will try to resist the light, but it cannot overcome it. As we see moral confusion increasing in society, our hope rests securely in the ultimate triumph of God's kingdom. He calls the church to rise up in prayer and live out our true identity as children of the light. Though the present age brings unique challenges, God remains on the throne and continues to advance his saving purposes through our witness.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION & DISCUSSION:
As you share your faith through your words and lifestyle, when and how have you encountered receptivity to your faith? When and how have you encountered resistance?
What did it feel like to encounter receptivity? How might you follow up now with those who have been receptive in the past?
What did it feel like to encounter resistance? How might you increase your capacity to not be shaken by resistance?
PRAYER:
Take a moment to pray for God’s grace to pursue both those who have been receptive and those who have been resistant.
Ask God if there’s a specific person he wants you to continue praying for during the rest of the week and take a moment to notice if a specific name or face comes to mind.
Finally, ask God to give you guidance, boldness, and opportunities to follow up with that person.
